Discover our selection of the best credit cards to maximize your savings on gas and transit. Enjoy exclusive benefits, cash back, and rewards tailored to your commuting needs.
With the constant increases in gas prices over recent months, it is natural to look for ways to save at the pump. One of the best credit cards in Canada for gas purchases is the SimplyCash® Preferred Card from American Express. With this card, you get 4% cash back on gas.
The credit cards below are the best to help you reduce your bill if you have significant expenses for local transit or gas. Use one of our favorite tips: buy gift cards.
Indeed, if your credit card offers more points when shopping at the grocery store, buy gift cards from your favorite gas station.
For example, with the American Express Cobalt® Card, you can earn 5 points for grocery purchases and 2 points at gas stations. You can therefore buy Esso, Petro-Canada, and even Uber gift cards at Metro or Super C, and then use them to pay for your gas.
With this trick, a $100 gift card purchase at a grocery store will earn you 500 points ($100 X 5), instead of 200 points for a purchase made directly at Esso or Petro-Canada.
The same principle applies to the BMO CashBack® World Elite®* Mastercard®* (up to 5% for groceries and 3% for gas) and the Scotia Momentum® Visa Infinite* Card (4% for groceries and 2% for gas).
Additionally, another tip is to combine the gas station’s loyalty program with your credit card.
With its CIBC Dividend® Visa Infinite* Card, CIBC offers gas discounts at Ultramar with the Journie program.
Finally, if you use local transit such as the Société de Transport de Montreal (STM), the Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM), the Réseau de Transport de la Capitale (RTC), or the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), consider a credit card like the Scotiabank Passport™ Visa Infinite+ Card, which offers 2 points per dollar for local transit.
Here is a table summarizing the different offers. For more details, read on or click on the name of a card.
