And other friends who had been there with the children encouraged us to go anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And we did the right thing! I think if I had to do it over again, I wouldn&#8217;t go to the Kr\u00fcger. Maybe the weather didn&#8217;t help, but there were often long hours of driving without seeing many animals. All the houses are protected, not only by high walls, but also by barbed wire and even electric fences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This may indeed shock some North Americans who are not used to it. Being also a European, I may also have this vision of protection that we have in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the barbed wire and electric fences are a reminder that South Africa is still a dangerous country, whose past is still firmly anchored in all memories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not uncommon for ATMs to be guarded so that you don&#8217;t get robbed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is also not uncommon to see areas that are completely enclosed, such as war zones. It is sometimes difficult to assess whether you are in a secure area or not. We&#8217;re not taking any chances.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not get out of the car, whether the scenery is beautiful or not, if you are the only tourist in the area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide a backup wallet with some expired card s (<a href=\"https:\/\/mp-2702.milesopedia.dev\/en\/guide\/tutorials\/travel-safety\/\">milesopedian tip<\/a>), some small bills and card  from an inactive hotel room to give if you are to be robbed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never hitchhike a stranger to the side of the road.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Know the address of the Canadian embassy or local police in case you need to contact them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Watch out for monkeys. Very smart and fast, they will steal as soon as you get out of your car!<\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-my-misadventure\">My misadventure<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>As Audrey mentioned in the forum, our last day in the Cape Town area did not go as planned. As we were coming back from the Stellenbosch area to catch our flight at the airport in Cape Town, we decided to make a one-hour detour by road to the seaside so that our children could take a nap in the car on the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We walked along the shantytowns for several kilometres, then we reached the seaside with magnificent landscapes&#8230; and isolated. Then when they came back, I decided to go and make a video. It was a good thing: a man came out of nowhere, started running towards me and then pointed a gun at me, asking me a simple question: &#8220;Give me your phone&#8221;. Their only advice is to press charges.
