Whether for history, architecture or gastronomy, it&#8217;s always a safe bet. This summer, I was looking for an affordable destination to spend ten days or so, and my choice fell on <strong>Bulgaria<\/strong>. Little known to Quebecers, it nevertheless has much to offer. I&#8217;ll guide you through this land of mountains, seashores, ancient monasteries and picturesque villages.<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"component component__deferred_contents wp-block-milesgutenberg-deferred-contents\">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-travel-to-bulgaria-getting-there-with-the-self-transfer-hack\">Travel to Bulgaria &#8211; Getting there with the self-transfer hack<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>There are no direct flights between Montreal and Sofia, the Bulgarian capital. As the destination is not very popular with Quebecers, flights are expensive and involve stopovers. During my research for September, I found prices around $1,800 with one layover or $1,600 with multiple layovers.<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"component component__deferred_contents wp-block-milesgutenberg-deferred-contents\">\n\t\t\t\t<div\n\t\t\t\tdata-template='s'\n\t\t\t\tdata-post_type='post'\n\t\t\t\tdata-per_page='4'\n\t\t\t\tclass='deferred_container--preload container_post container_template--s container_count--1'\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdata-tag=\"post_id\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdata-post_ids=\"225919\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t>\n\t\t<article class=\"post-preview\">\n\t<div class=\"post-preview-thumbnail\">\n\t\t<div class=\"shimmer shimmer-image\"><\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"post-preview-content\">\n\t\t<div class=\"simmer-bar-group\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"shimmer shimmer-bar\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t<div class=\"shimmer shimmer-bar\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/article>\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p>It is always possible <a href=\"https:\/\/mp-2702.milesopedia.dev\/en\/guide\/strategy\/cheap-flights-europe-points\/\">to use credit card or airline reward points<\/a> to cover the costs, but if you are saving your points for another project or haven&#8217;t accumulated enough yet, there is another option. I chose the <strong>self-transfer<\/strong> hack.  The trick is quite simple: you search for the cheapest ticket to Europe in a search engine and then search again from that destination to your chosen vacation destination. So we have two reservations that are not linked together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How to do this? On flight comparison sites like <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"Skyscanner\" href=\"\/go\/skyscanner\/\" rel=\"noindex\">Skyscanner<\/a>, you can enter &#8220;Europe&#8221; or &#8220;World&#8221; in the search bar. From Paris, I then booked a round trip to Sofia at $250 via Munich. A <strong>total of $1,045<\/strong>, a significant saving compared to the initial price of $1,600. Furthermore, the bookings were among my eligible expenses to apply the <strong>$100 travel credit<\/strong>, which comes annually with my HSBC World Elite<sup>&reg;<\/sup> Mastercard<sup>&reg;<\/sup> (which is now discontinued). However, allow enough time between bookings because since they are not linked, the airline is not required to rebook you on another flight if you miss your connection.  So it&#8217;s wise to spend the day or night on site to avoid stress. Warning: major cities have several airports, so check airport codes before booking to avoid having to make transfers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to the <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"National Bank World Elite Mastercard\" href=\"\/go\/world-elite-mastercard-from-national-bank\/\" rel=\"noindex\">National Bank World Elite Mastercard<\/a>, I was also able to enjoy the <a href=\"https:\/\/mp-2702.milesopedia.dev\/avis\/salon\/world-mastercard-banque-nationale-aeroport-yul-montreal-trudeau\/\">National Bank lounge<\/a> for free with my guest upon departure from Montreal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, as I was traveling on an economy flight in Europe, the baggage allowance was only 7kg per person. It is also possible to pay for <strong>day tours<\/strong> from Sofia, through <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"Viator\" href=\"\/go\/viator\/\" rel=\"noindex\">Viator<\/a> or <a title=\"Civitatis\" href=\"https:\/\/mp-2702.milesopedia.dev\/en\/go\/civitatis\/\" rel=\"noindex\">Civitatis<\/a>, for example.  However, if you&#8217;re comfortable driving a manual vehicle, I suggest you <a href=\"https:\/\/mp-2702.milesopedia.dev\/en\/?p=207739\">rent a car<\/a>. Prices are ridiculously low and infrastructure is in good condition. As an example, it cost us $85 for an 8-day rental, including liability insurance and unlimited mileage.<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"component component__deferred_contents wp-block-milesgutenberg-deferred-contents\">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p>By paying for the reservation with a travel credit card like the <a href=\"https:\/\/mp-2702.milesopedia.dev\/en\/credit-cards\/scotiabank-passport-visa-infinite-card\/\">Scotiabank Passport\u2122 Visa Infinite +* Card<\/a>, you are covered for damage and collisions. Simply refuse the rental company&#8217;s insurance. Afterwards, the user must go to the service station and pay the bill. However, we found it convenient to pay a fixed price for the road tax sticker, so we didn&#8217;t have to worry about it. This option was offered at the rental center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding parking, only Sofia will cause you headaches, as street parking is limited to 2 hours during the day and must be paid by text message and then billed to the phone account. However, it is impossible to pay with a <a href=\"https:\/\/mp-2702.milesopedia.dev\/en\/reviews\/products\/airalo-esim-card-internet-travel-without-roaming\/\">prepaid SIM card.<\/a> You will then need to use 24-hour parking lots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-things-to-do-in-bulgaria\">Things to do in Bulgaria<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In winter, it&#8217;s <strong>ski<\/strong> tourism that draws people to the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It must be said that with more than 600 <strong>thermal springs<\/strong> scattered across the country, it is good to rest there after sports, in all seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In summer, the coasts are crowded with Russian tourists and those from Western Europe. Several <strong>seaside resorts<\/strong> have sprung up along the coast, and there&#8217;s no shortage of activities for the whole family.
